Civil engineer is professional which deals with construction and construction further divided in  many stream some of those are- building construction,water supply,irrigation,surveying,railway,bridge,tunnel,fluid mechanics,quantity surveying.highway and transportation etc.

so you need not to worry because of there are a lot of branches of civil engineering where you can begin your career and all of these streams can private and private sector or semi government.Let's talk about all of those one by one.

Job opportunities

There are a lot of companies where you can find job and start your career and role maybe can different because of there are several job position which belongs to civil engineering.If you  are thinking about private or government  sector don't worry you will have good break to find out job.

Site Engineer
If you are in building construction firm then you can join as site engineer,QC engineer,supervisor  and you are duties will be supervision all civil related works on site- masonry works,steel fixing,plaster,painting,paving and tiles works,leveling,take of quantities etc.

Design Engineer (Drafting and Designing)

If you are under architectural firms then you will be responsible for drawings 2D,3D,4D and you will be work as structure designer for this probably you will have need years experience because of it's little bit tough however you firstly join as junior structure engineer.If you are thinking about joining as structure engineer then get user of Auto cad , google sketch up , 3D Max ,Staad pro ,micro-station ,etabs etc.however there are many  another applications depends on your employer.Better to get certification  some of above computer applications before you go ahead.

 Quantity surveyor

Quantity surveyor doesn't responsible for land surveying or leveling rather they are responsible for quantity ,they take off quantities from drawings fill on BOQ or  give estimate and costing reports.Nowadays this could be easier than calculation on paper and long calculation by computer applications well I worked on Auto cad for quantities although many applications are available.

Land Surveyor 

Fortunately there are many role a civil engineer can work,here I am going talk about land surveying this professional deals with leveling and surveying by total station,dumpy level,GPS etc.whether before land surveyor used compass or chains for measuring  and surveying purpose.when there are need for height,level,angle measuring then land surveyor comes under work.If you have interest in land surveying go with dumpy level ,auto level ,GPS etc and your career can start  almost in every stream of civil engineering so results can be positive if you are thinking as land surveyor.some countries education system have different programmes for land surveyor rather than civil engineering so make yourself ready for a particular course if you are from those countries.

Highway Engineer

Roads also come under civil engineering and if you are in highway department and you are responsible for supervising roads or planning them then obvious you are highway or transportation engineer.Highway engineer make plans before they start work also on basis of traffic,lanes,design,material chosen etc.

Bridge ,Tunnel,Railway

Well ,another where civil engineers can be join on construction of bridges,tunnels and as well as railway.
  • Bridges
Suspension bridge,inverted arch bridge ,culvert ,fly over,truss bridge,cantilever,moveable and beam bridges also erection under civil engineer.It's also little tough so better to do master in structure or bridge engineer before go in but it is not really essential or necessary whether hold very good knowledge.
  • Tunnel 
Blasting or cutting the rocks and access inside them is known as tunnel.these can give access to railway gauge or road during construction tunnel civil engineers also have major role.
  • Railway
The construction of railway line (gauge) also made by civil engineers because of they have studied in construction of railway also in collage or universities so civil engineers also have job opportunities in railway link construction.

Water supply Engineer

Urban or rural sewerage also constructed in the being of civil engineer.They deal with water supply works such as-waste water treatment,sewerage, septic tank and many more ways.This is quite on trend so don't afraid to apply as water supply engineer.

Irrigation Engineer

Irrigation engineer deals with water quantity required for different crops,head work on canal or river,dams,regulators construction and more.Fortunately all of these works also construction under civil engineer.

Interior Designer
Although interior designer have different degree or diploma but many civil engineer also working as interior designer as well as exterior if you are thinking about become interior designer then join first some classes as 3D designer ,where they teach you some software essential while designing interior or exterior components and during I was in United Arab Emirates I saw there have officially rule for civil engineer diploma holder to get licensed as interior designer.So don't worry if you are civil engineer and see your future as interior designer.


Still not finisher rather more departments are waiting for you as environment engineer,draftsman,supervisor (furniture industry) etc.
